Philip Nobel

Remainders, Miscellany and the Occasional Rant

Open Letter: Sic Him Edition

This mash note found its way to Metropolis:

“What a sad, sad man!!! Philip Noble should be fired from all of his writing jobs. The guy’s head is so far up his butt he might as well be eating his own crap every second of the day. He bragged about cheating on his wife in Elle Magazine and the whole article is him trying to justify his actions while simultaneously begging for everyone’s approval. Not only is he incredibly sexist, he isn’t even that great a writer. I’m going to boycott everything that prints his articles. I don’t approve of any publication that looks the other way for any type of discriminatory actions (whether or not it is printed by them). Plus, he even managed to make marriage sound like a joke! You’re a real class act Philip Noble! You’re mommy must be soo proud! Way to set a great example for your kids!!”

Words Matter: Stressed Syllable Edition

“There is, it must be said, something of a long-standing tension between writers and subeditors. We writers are rather protective of our words, prone to filing late and flouncing about and are altogether a tad precious. In short, subeditors view us as the Little Lord Fauntleroys of the office, and we in turn view them as our evil nemeses, hellbent on our undoing.”

Press Crawls up its Own Ass: Eking Out Edition

How do the poor tribal people manage to get by without the AP? “Few citizens in impoverished Afghanistan were aware of Obama’s unannounced visit, and few have been following the U.S. presidential race, being too busy eking out an existence amid soaring violence and with limited access to news media.”
